How melt and pour soap works
A melt and pour base is a finished soap block — usually glycerin-rich — that melts cleanly at low temperatures (typically 54–60°C / 130–140°F), accepts fragrance, colorants, and additives, then re-solidifies as it cools. Because saponification is already complete, there is no lye in the final bar and no waiting for the cure that cold or hot process soap requires.
The trade-off is customization. You are starting with someone else's formula, so the oil blend and base recipe are fixed. You control fragrance, color, shape, inclusions (botanicals, exfoliants), and layering — but not the underlying fatty acid profile.

Cut and melt the base
Chop your base into roughly 1-inch cubes so it melts evenly. Melt in a microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each, or in a double boiler over low heat. Avoid boiling — overheating causes bubbles and a rough surface.

Cool slightly, then add fragrance
Let the melted base cool to around 54°C (130°F) before adding fragrance oil or essential oil. Adding scent to base that is too hot causes it to burn off quickly. A typical usage rate is 1–3% fragrance by weight of the base.

Add color
Use cosmetic-grade colorants, mica powders, or soap-safe liquid dyes. Mix a small amount of colorant with a few drops of alcohol or glycerin before stirring into the base — this prevents streaking. Start with less than you think you need; M&P color intensifies as the soap sets.

Pour into molds
Pour slowly to minimize air bubbles. If bubbles appear on the surface, spritz lightly with 91%+ isopropyl alcohol — they disappear almost instantly. This also helps layers bond when doing pours in stages.

Unmold and use
M&P soap sets at room temperature in 1–2 hours. Silicone molds release easily; hard plastic may need a brief freeze (5–10 minutes). The soap is ready to use immediately — no cure time required. Wrap finished bars in shrink wrap or cellophane to prevent sweating (glycerin absorbs humidity).
Common melt and pour mistakes
Overheating the base
Boiling or prolonged high heat causes bubbles, a rough surface, and fragrance burnoff. Use short microwave bursts and stop as soon as it's fully liquid.
Glycerin dew ("sweating")
Glycerin-rich bases naturally attract moisture from the air. This is normal, not a sign of failure. Wrap bars in airtight cellophane right after unmolding.
Layers not bonding
When pouring a second layer on top of a set first layer, spritz the surface with isopropyl alcohol first. This melts the surface slightly and creates a strong bond.
Too much fragrance
Exceeding 3% fragrance can prevent the soap from setting properly and may cause seizing or a greasy surface. Weigh fragrance rather than estimating by eye.
